A Little Cupcake History

Cupcakes were first mentioned in the late 18th century and derived their name from the following uses of the term ‘cupcake’. The first was from the singular pottery cups they were baked in and hence the name ‘cupcake’ stuck to describe these tiny cakes.

The second was due to the method in which their ingredients were measured. Cakes that were made from a volume measurement instead of a weight measurement were often called ‘cup cakes’, as a standard cup was used to measure the volume. These cakes were generally baked as layer cakes and were made up of one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour and four eggs.

Continuing their popularity into the 21st century, cupcakes today are widely enjoyed by people of all ages. Such is their popularity that there are countless cupcake bakeries creating all manner of delicious cupcake delights.
